New Gametype ideas?
I guess this is a continuation of my 'New Direction' Blog post.
What id like to see is some discussion about how to revamp DM gametypes a bit or even replace them entirely. Imo, the biggest strength of DM FPS's compared to other FPS's is in the weapons. They are fun to use, all different from each other and compliment each other in a way. The big turn off to the new generation of FPS gamers is the whole item control and cycling thing, in 1v1's and in teamgames. Its just not accessible to new players, and warsow has enough barriers as it is, with the movement and just adapting to the different weapons etc. Also, that generation is more used to being able to join a game, get some frags regardless of your skill level. The items bar this kind of thing aswell, as a) u cant frag without weapons and b) even with the weapons, it can be pretty tough to frag someone who is stacked itemwise.
With the gametype scripts, it becomes alot easier to make new and interesting gametypes, so i thought maybe it would be worth asking the community for ideas and stuff. Id really like to work on making warsow gametypes more accessible to newer and more casual gamers.
ill start:
I thought a classbased plant the bomb style gametype could be quite cool (infact, i think that having every gametype based on the same classes would be quite interesting, even 1v1's) where the classes have different movement, weapons and hp/ap parameters...
so got any ideas??? What id really like to see are ideas to make really easy to learn and play gametypes…

wait a second:
you want that deathmatch players have an easier entrance in the game?
I don't think that adding classes and some bomb plant gametype will help that in any way. This would confuse them even more.
A noob that plays cs for the first time also has no idea what to do.

its to make things more accessible for people that have never
played DM games, rather than for people that are used to them. Its
also to make things a bit different and to make the gamestyle a bit
more 'fresh'.
if u think of it, people coming to dm games have to a) get used to the weapons b) learn the movement and c) learn about item and map control...
these are huge obstacles, and the item thing is played to death...
what im looking for is ideas about how to make some new gametypes that work totally differently to what people are used to in DM styles games...

I would say you could do a mod, which has Administrative powers and
stuff, if its possible.
Hmn.. New gametypes would be great and it would give more diversity
to the game. Note; I say new gametypes. Dont remove or change any
of the good ol' DM gametypes. And with 0.5 people have a choice;
those who likes to collect weapons and items can play DM, those who
like to spawn with all weapons can play FFA. Like in 0.42, maybe
SOME people had more fun in warmup of DM. Those will be happy to
see FFA with 0.5. The rest, both veterans of DM (in f.ex. Q2/Q3/QL)
and also new players, can play normal DM if they prefer so. Its
more diversity and we have a choice. We can play what WE prefer to
play.
As for the bomb-gametype:
Why not make it like CS? A lot of people likes CS, I'm sure they will like this gametype too if someone creates it. Have two teams (TDM) and either class-based or spawn with all weapons. "The Attackers" have to plant the bomb (drop an item - read below), "The Defenders" have to prevent that to happen. If it happens, they have to "defuse" it within a set timer (standing close to the bomb or something). If the "bomb" goes off (timer runs out or something), the attackers get a point. If it gets defused, the defenders get a point.
- Spawn with all weapons OR class-based (both including strong ammo).
- Spawn with 125hp and no armor/ or f.ex. 50 armor. Remember that new players dont like that it takes too long to kill someone.
- The "planting zones" are decided by the mapper (two per map). Maybe you can use the same zones as in TDO? Btw, more maps should be made playable for TDO. For example wdm5, wdm6 etc doesn't have control points for TDO, yet they are great maps for it..
- Planting the bomb can be done by a player (any player) dropping an item on one of the planting zones (one at a time only). This can be an item looking like a bomb. And ofc this would require a new key/button in the "Keyboard controls" setup named "drop bomb" or something. The other team can defuse this bomb by standing close to it.
Just an idea for the bomb-plant gametype. May not work but who knows.. and I know it sounds similar to TDO but its not quite the same.. ;)

Lets make one gametype for the whole game. We'll call it, "CA".
happened with 0.3.
Well I would love to see "The Runner" mod 2.0 in 0.5
but I don't think the runner is something for beginners....
Why? Ever played CTF against woody or tried to catch him in the runner?

Yep. But it should be the version where runner doesn't have battlesuit.
DM/FFA is the easiest gametypes. just pickup weapons and shoot your
enemies. I think you're overcomplicating things waaaay too much. if
someone doesn't know how to play DM, it's very likely he's mentally
handicapped anyway, adding classes and bombs won't help him at all
I disagree there, Vic. Because ffa, while simple, is chaotic and
stressing for a kind of players used to more clear kind of
gameplay. A gametype with clear goals and clear fight points would
be a great thing.
I think I agree with Vic here. DM/FFA are the easiest gametypes. A
bomb-gametype would be great but it may become complicated for new
players (although it could be fun for veterans). I mean, they need
to know how to drop the bomb, how to defuse, where to find the
planting zones etc.
Anyway, come with ideas and maybe we can make new gametypes out of it (adding new gametypes to the excisting ones). DM/FFA are classics and easy gametypes, dont remove them. And now that we have both of them (pickup and spawn), more people will be pleased.
Btw, I think TDO will be a fun gametype with 0.5. Yeah you need to know what to do, but apart from that its a fun gametype. We'll see how it goes.. ;)
