Beating a Dead Horse? (Maybe.)
Hey everyone, I'm just gonna come right out and say this, there's
really no reason I should beat around the bush. Steam will be
releasing a new service called Greenlight in the upcoming months
that involves the community voting on what games get published to
the distribution giant. I know this idea has pretty much been done
to death and I'm willing to leave this topic dead forever if you
guys shun me enough lol. I personally want to see this game pushed
out to a wider audience though and as always I see no better way to
do so than Steam. I'll throw down a link to the page so you guys
can see what it's all about.
http://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/
I'd like to add that the 0.7 beta is absolutely amazing, loving the new UI and tweaks. This game just gets better with every update.
--ULMG Out
P.S. I know that I started a topic like this before, but it was before this service was announced. I'd just like to hear any new opinions, sorry if this gets posted a lot.

Problem with Steam is that, altough there are some F2P titles, they
all have some kind of payment-model in them. Warsow is a real Free
Game and the developers (as I understood it from various other
treads like yours) want to keep it that way. This means they won't
integrate some kind of F2P-mechanism just to get the game on Steam.

make hats for warsow?
i thought of the same when i heard about greenlight, but i dont think that warsow has enough people/votes to get in there. and it's also not a given that the game is going to be on steam if we get enough votes, the admins will only take it into consideration and review the game and if it matches their high quality standards!
also ProoF got a good point there.
i think there are other ways to draw more people into warsow once 0.7 is released.
you could ask ex-quakers ( big personalities in e-sports like Slasher, DJWheat or Painuser ) for shoutouts/advertisement via twitter, or whatever.
but ofc, we could give it a try once the time has come!

I think this won't be a problem for wsw.
But yes, we will never get enough votes. Look at the player counts (dropping all the time).

remember two years ago when we voted for warsow on jeuxvideo.com we
reached 22.000 votes, so i guess it's not a problem of players :D
Question is, do we want War§ow to be on steam? I don't think that
it would bring us that much more than some random CS-players
checking out the game once then dropping it.
Fast-phaced FPS are a niche-genre, we have to accept that. We won't see playercounts like in LoL, CS 1.6 or SCII. Hell we could be happy if we get as many players as WarCraft III currently has.
The whole "promote War§ow!!!!111"-thingy is good but we can't expect miracles from the promotion. I think the QW-Community is a good example on what we should stride for. The community is really small and they don't get much public attention in the modern eSport-circuit (appart from the two DreamHacks back in 2009/2010) but they have their annualy QHLAN with a lot of the most well known players attending. Appart from that they have a long-running TDM league with different divisions for teams with different skill-levels. Also regular Duel-cups with or without prizemoney, designed for either pros, amateurs, noobs or all of the 3 in one. They don't whine about their game dying or not getting the attention it deserves. They don't triy to get new players in at all costs. They just enjoy the game and stick together as a community, also if a new player finds its way to QW they help him as good as they can.
I personally think that that's the way to go for us (the wsw-community, I concider myself a part of it even tough I have jumped on and off the train in irregular periods of time). Getting a bunch of new players is good and we should work on that, but we should not try to make Warsow as popular as TF2, AVA or any other F2P game out there, by adding hats 'n' Co. to it. It is and was a game by the community and for the community.

Cmon, I know I rage at forums sometime but every new player is more than welcome. And in-game I gladly tutor them to the gameplay.
Calm down your tone before I break your arms. Your comment has been
redacted.

I wasn't raging. I tutor them as much as possible (I've never insulted a new player). I have taught countless players. By jerk noobs I meant people like this
Player: Hah this game sucks, pathetic quake clone.
Player: F*** hackers QL is better .
Player: cheaters
Player: QL clone
Player: Gonna uninstall this shit now
or
Player: LAWL uberstike is 100 times cooler (website address and spams it for 4 times)
... I could go on for hours, I read this shit every day.
^I didnt make these up really.
I mean that the more players we get the better because some will stay and we will have a bigger community, Im not mad.
WTFProof was against new players. I'm not

You would be surprised how many cs players who find wsw, stay and love it.

Well you sounded like a bit. Ah yeah I didnt read your post to the end (FAIL)
And I understand your concern about wsw becomming too popular. It would destroy the friendly ingame/out community (I was playing CS the other day(6 months pause), it felt weird, so few chat, most of it insults).

Hello... new player here. I currently play QL, Warsow (against
bots, anyway, until a North American 0.7 scene develops), and
Xonotic, and I absolutely love Warsow from what I have seen thus
far. Keep up the good work, the devs have certainly impressed
me.
I might switch over to this completely if the community turns out to be ridiculously nice, comparatively speaking.
Thanks for all the hard work! It looks like it has paid off handsomely.
Cheers!

Thank you for the kind words, dear sir

I've seen on there before.
I am not sure if we can make something happen here,
but I guess trying to get Warsow onto Steam this way would be worth a shot.
..Though that is not our decision since the developers have to submit it ;)

Warsow had greater ambitions though: one of the reasons 0.1 was so successful was that many Quakers/uters etc saw that potential and it was familiar on some way to many gamers - you had a huge melting pot from the different communities in those days.
You can clearly see this in the way the game has evolved, with all the attention going to the hardcore modes at first, with the more casual game types coming only after the majority of the hardcore community dropped the game.
Clearly warsow strives to be something bigger - I've never seen any other games claim to be a sport, but warsow does, right on its frontpage!

Same here, i just started playing warsow today, and i agree with steam, i think we should make everything to promote the game, fps community really needs a game for competitive play imo :)
