COMMERCIALS on servers

yes, doubt it'll be very popular tho :)
if this can bring more servers, more intrest from the sponsors, i
think will be popular...
is there a script language to control the server, or must it be c++
source code.

but the source should be available
Actually, you can keep it closed as long as you don't distribute the server at all. :p
However, you quite definitely require a cgame change, so you'll need to at least distribute the player mod with it's source (which allows suppressing it, by creating a modified mod. :)). *edit* well.. what one could do is, create a plug-in loading mechanism for clients and have the actual change in the plug-in (closed source, for it's no longer strictly a modification of the source code ^^) ... and ease creating plug-in hax :)
I could imagine such a thing becoming very popular though, if there was say a league with prize money (which shouldn't be that hard if you have you get enough money from these ads).
Nope, at the moment there is no such way to have any kind of 'plug-ins' for the server. IIRC so. once made some modification so you could do some python stuff... but I don't know what you could do with it exactly. So you'll most likely have to do it in plain c ... or at least write a little interfacing code for some scripting language first.
Uz, the definition of "derivative work" is very hazy, you shouldn't
make it sound like "if you put some sort of wrapper around it, it's
not GPL-bound" because IIRC that is simply not the case. It maybe
be that this particular example wouldn't be (I am not a copyright
lawyer) but it is not true in general.
