First, some context: I'm new to warsow (hello =) and I'm starting to get my feet wet in what looks like a very promising game. I played Q3 OSP CTF for quite some time back in the day, until I fell into a WoW hole for the last 3 years. This post is to solicit some help orienting myself in a way that promotes good habits so I don't get stuck down the line. I'm having some difficulty getting used to the extra specials button, and am mostly concerned with getting a good keybinding setup. I've read this post: http://www.warsow.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=17376 among several others that have given me some background, along with realizing that jumps are queued which should really help no matter where I end up.

So my dilemma, in my Q3 days I used a really wack setup (based on mis-entering the recommendations of the person who introduced me to Q1):
del=strafe left
end=strafe right
insert=move back
mouse2=forward
enter=jump
shift=walk

To add the specials button, I moved these over to sdf (no e =) and added special to space. However, the dichotomy between jumping with my pinky and specialling with my thumb was really awkward. I tried using a esdf mouse2=jump space=special set up, and while I could move and jump around a little better (these are close to my WoW controls, paradoxically), trying to shoot at the same time is going to take quite a bit of work.

So here's the question, should I try and rewire my whole thinking and go with a more modern esdf set up? Or does anyone have any recommendations for modifying my wierd set up? (I saw a couple others with mouse2=forward in that thread; maybe I could move special to mouse3.) Does anyone have any experience making such a switch? Thanks in advance.

PS Do people walk for silence in warsow? Can't say I recollect that in the few demos I've watched.
PPS My empire for some sweet sweet allweaps ctf =]

visit #warsow.pickup at quakenet for some "normal" ctf. There are games going on frequently. I'm afraid it's the only way to get a ctf game atm, tho.

I don't know what to say about the keybinding. Your setup is quite strange. I think I'd consider replacing mouse2 with jump or special, but dunno what'd be a good place to put +forward.

people dont walk, as running normally doesnt make any sound. I sometimes use walk to have a tiny bit more control etc, but its not really worth it.

Id recommend making the switch to esdf in your case, as there is more need to have all the weapons easily available, something that isnt really necessary in QW as there you only really need RL and LG bound :P.

I've never thought of it that way, ill have to have a go like that :)

atm, im on WASD mainstream keybinds. I use Q for position save, and E for position load. mainly for freestyle, or local wdm etc map tricking :)

Well - I put my +special on the thumb button of my mouse (MOUSE4 or MOUSE5), and jump on space (with normal wsad setup). I tried a lot of things for the +special and this was the best option for me.

I have +special on the right mouse button, jump on the left shift and normal WASD config (actually, it's zqsd on my french keyboard).

As for weapons, zoom on mouse 3, riot on wheelup, grenades on wheel down, rocket on my mouse 4(on the right side of my mouse), EB on mouse 5 (on the right side of my mouse), laser gun on spacebar, Plasma on F and gunblade on e.

It seems weird for some people, but I used to use the arrow keys to move and ctrl to jump, so I always try to jump with the left side of my hand, not the thumb. And mith mouse's extra buttons, I have 4 weapons on my mouse hand and 3 on my mouse hand, wich is easier for me.

Be careful of deadkeys, i.e keyboard combinations where the 3rd pressed key doesn't register.
I guess this is most important with movement keys. You can open notepad and hold all the different combinations of strafes (like fwd + left) then use your jump button and see if the stream of letters changes, if it doesn't or just stops abruptly, you've got a deadkey combo. If you're fussy you can try the same thing with crouch (doesn't matter so much in WSW).
That's why I stick to ESDF, same as your modern setup.

I don't think it should take much longer than 1 week to get used a new setup if you play ~ 1 hour a day.
Put your favourite weapons in easy to reach places (I like using my index finger to select rockets/eb/laser with R,T and G respectively). Mwheelup and mwheel down are useful for odds and sods (wouldn't put anything major on these though)!
Also it's nice to have a convenient gunblade bind these days, because it's a useful weapon now...

I used to play arrow keys (cs 1.6 (cal i//im/m caleague.com (wasnt bad) and then I started playing warsow and knew that I had to start playing on wasd cause i needed buttons that i could quickly switch my weapons around (cs i used to be able to scroll wheel weapons and nades awesome and the last weapon was useful) Im getting the hang of things now and its much better to get used to wasd cause you have more options of keys and bindings. Just my opinion.

WASD for me, space jumps, shift special, and then Q,E,Caps,2,R, mouse-side1 and -2 and mousewheelRight for weapons.
It's basic, but it just works.
Sure, ESDF gives you some more keys to work with, but I find it's generally faster to split your weapon binds over both hands. It leaves you less confused which button you should press, because there's only 2 keys maximum per finger. At least for me it does.
(Actually, left hand index finger has three keys: D, E, R. But since R is assigned to grenade launcher I never have to use that bind;))
All the extra keys esdf would offer would probably be filled with voice chat spam, which is annoying as hell when overused, so you're (read: I am) probably better off with WASD.
Besides, it's not like WsW has 17 weapons;)

Switching won't take too long. For me it's usually 2 hours before I feel comfortable with a similar setup, and 2 days for a radically different setup.
Before I really become fluent with it though takes a week, mostly.

The main thing is to just try some of them for 10 minutes, and see if you have any major annoyances with them. If something is bugging you right away, dump it. If it feels good, stick with it for a while and see if that impression lasts. The most important thing is that it feels natural, and you can probably feel that right away.

Slight change of setup, due to playing more Quake3 lately. (I try to keep my keybinds consistent between games)

-Moved LG from Q to Mouse2.

-Moved RL from WheelRight to Sidebutton 2.

-Moved zoom from Mouse2 to Q. (Better fit, since most of the time you want to zoom you're not going to be moving a lot anyways. Makes for faster switch to LG)

-Moved Riotgun from Sidebutton2 to 3. Not used often.
