[Duel] Timing tutorial lesson by GoReY
Hello friends! As alot of you already know I did a tutorial on
timing some year back. But it was removed, so here it is again!
Item spawns:
GA - 25 seconds
YA - 25 seconds
RA - 25 seconds
MH - 20 seconds after last player who picked it up has 100health or less
Weapons - 15 seconds
Ammo böxes - 20 seconds
HP Bubbles - 25 seconds
For la beginner:
Ok so in most cases you have already gotten yourself familiar with WaRsOwS amazingness. I am going to explain how you can easily start off to keep your head into the game.
If you are totally new, then allow me to explain how players time items. We use the timer clock, that shows the time left in a match to calculate by using math with these item timers above this text to figure out when to show up for them. Hence keeping us in control and keep fraggin n smackin n other assorted things. : 3. So if you see me write for example 05:05, thats how much time has passed in a match, and in your head you calculate by adding for example 25seconds, you think in advance and plan when you are going to show up. Extremly useful in these type of FPS games.
The basic method:
You pick up Red armor @ 02:41 (with the clock counting upwards, cg_showtimer 3). When you have picked it up, just add 20 seconds to the clock, 03:01 boom. You will then return to the RA area 5 seconds before it respawns. Easy to keep track, nice way to implement the habit of timing with easy math. Thats peoples most issues that they can time it but forget to show up, then they just give up. Alot of times people say they cant time, they have tried it, they did it before but failed etc. NO. YOU DIDNT TRY IT. IF YOU DID YOU WOULD HAVE SUCEEDED. No mental limitations, remove this immediatly.
A player known as h1o actually did something similar to this. He would look at the ammo box he just picked up before taking RA for example. This way he knew ra was coming up in about 5 seconds.
For la advanz0r l33t fukin h4xm4n:
Ok so you have trained a few weeks with the basic method and you now have developed a habit of actually not forgetting to show up to the item. Basically what you are going to do is to time it on the spot, by adding a +5 seconds to the basic method.
Example: RA pickup @ 02:41 + 20 seconds + 5 seconds = 03:06. When you finally have practiced this enough the math will go in a split second, dont worry and do not stress. It will happen. Just like the rape in the dark alley. (lolz he maedett raepjok3).
Anyway you could either do it like i just typed, or the other way around.
: RA pickup @ 02:41 + 5 seconds + 20. Either way.
One thing you should know though, but you may probably figure this out easily on your own, is that if you take the item on the spot several times in a row, the last number, being 1 in this case. That number will shift from two different numbers.
: example: RA pickup @ 02:41 + 20 + 5 = 03:06
: example: RA pickup @ 03:06 + 20 + 5 = 03:31
: example: RA pickup @ 03:31 + 20 + 5 = 03:56
: example: RA pickup @ 03:56 + 20 + 5 = 04:21
etc etc. Learn every possible way, that if you have xx:x6, the last number will always be 6 after an 1.
Not really complicated stuff here as you may notice, but it takes some getting used to and anyone who is reading this, has a head and two arms is physically capable of doing this.
Timing of mega. While the opponent has mega, it can sometimes be difficult to time it. You will just have to get a somewhat feel to when you have taken him below 100hp. But 20 is an even number, simple math and i dont really have anything more to say. Mega is important however, alot of players tend to miss it. Keep this in mind.
The result of implementing timing items will have a major affect on your gameplay in a positive way. Not only will you totally remove an uneccessary "random" factor by timing on "feel" and turn it into facts, but also keep your head in the game, sometimes even be one step ahead. A tip though when you start to implement this is to play lower skilled players, its what i personally did when i started. Playing nervous tight even games and just trying to learn how to time did not prove effective at all, for me atleast.
I do recommend timing your favorite ammo boxes also. And timing health bubbles, for example the 50hp on wdm2 and the two 25's on wdm5.
Over and out and then in again.

In the advanced method you have a typo. It's 02:41 + 20 + 5 = 3:06
not 2:06, else than that good read and nice tips there.
Thanks a lot! doesn't have to be as complicated as one might think
hehe.
Do you have any tip for adrenaline junkies that just forget to look
at the clock ? Because it's my case, i am able to time if the match
is really boring and i win by a lot but as soon as it's tied i'm so
forgetful about looking at the clock. Not only i forget to look at
it when opponents takes the armors, i also sometimes just don't
look even once in the 25s frame it's waiting to spawn.
Luckily, i've learned to time "on feel" with decent accuracy and i can get helped with other items, but would be better with clock, especially when doing tight steals for example.

Use clownhud or the default one. The clownhud forces you to look at
the clock, because it's right beneath your crosshair and big and
the default one just has a fucking big clock on top of the screen.
GoReY, I think you need to write some words about armors' cycling.
It is amaizing method and sometimes it gives more opportunities
than just timing. :)
btw, thanks for nice tips, i didn't know about timing by ammos. Sounds amaizing!)

That is just it. Try playing lesser skilled players in the beginning until it becomes very normal. Thing is when you play close games there is a chance you forget item times if you time by feel.

What do you mean by armor cycling?
(updated 2012-08-07 14:13:51)
items loop, maplock I guess
MH --> GA --> YA --> RA etc

delaying pickup times to set armours in certain order, allowing you to pick them up while having to rememnber one time [time of first armour]
kinda makes you easy to trap :S
You should collaborate with Lo on this. He has been seriously
considering writing a bible about duel.

Warsow autotiming hud. Problems? *coolface*
Oh my god that must be the lamest shit I've ever seen... Might as well just add the spechud at once.
U might as well add an wallhack to that to get the full experience. I mean it's not like there is anything that will ban u anyway.

That's quite lame to be honest. I'd consider this a cheat. This ruins the competition completely and takes away the skill of timing away. You should get -5 Pork Points for this.
Please remove the download link right now.

This is just a different version of the popular pickup flash, seriously don't see the point in calling this a cheat. It adds/subtracts 25 seconds from the clock and shows the exact time it's going to spawn for a short period of time. If you consider this humanly hard, I'd go back to primary school and get my shit fixed. :D
