Pickup sucks
(troll inside)
Sunday morning again, I’m like "cool there is a ctf game running !", such a long time no play, let’s have some fun with it. But unfortunately, this is a pickup game... can’t join in atm, have to take a ticket and wait on the IRC channel, lazy, just wanna play – ay... let’s move down to I’M icabb2 server, since there ain’t any other regular game running.
Pickup kinda spoils the spontaneaous part of game. I used to love playing public bomb aswell but, since new 1.0 version has been released, there have been only a couple of opportunities. Out of an average 20 people playing regular in the morning, 10 are generally playing a pickup game, the rest of them either duelling or racing... there’s no bomb for breakfast.
I find it rather ironic that, on a game which really lacks players, and is looking forward to get more meat to frag (or else it’s gonna die), those who feel like giving it a try should find either empty or locked/pickup servers. We tried to promote it here in France and some new players came (as usual) to see what the new "complete" version looks like ; their feedback mostly states there ain’t no game running, and that – consequently – Warsow is a dead game.
Thing is new players are not interested enough in Warsow to create an account, try IRC, take a ticket and THEN have some fragging experience. They just wanna play and won’t waste more than a few minutes of their time to give this unknown, outsider game a chance. There’s plenty of other FPS with free-access servers after all.
So I think pickup is detrimental to Warsow, at least as long as it remains what I may call a "confidential" game... what do you think ?

Pickup games are high skilled, there would be no enjoyment for new
players to try to join in these games. Also, in some aspects they
are complementary, some gametypes play great in public (ca, bomb,
ffa) and other benefit from pickup system, it makes them more
competitive, because the game have a "state" that in-game join/quit
can disturb, and are more sensitive to unfair teams (tdm, ctf).
I agree that moving all games to pickup is bad, especially bomb pu is such a mistake imo, but pickup scene is still a good thing. Would love to see in-game pickup tool, btw.

Things have changed since last time i tried, then
I would like some pub games for ctf, but not sure how others would
feel about that.
This is a thing came out since 0.6. People play pickup because most
of the times pub servers look random or a hen-house..
But i agree that in a period where 90% of people are into ica and race servers, playing some bomb pub or ca pub would def help new incomers to play wsw.
Btw, in the first 2 weeks of 1.0 there were public games going on all day. It's weird they quit so fast. I guess finding the cause why they did that, would be a nice thing to improve the game and increase the community.

unless you're going to invest your time into becoming a high skilled player, warsow and other generic first person shooters generally have a low replayability value, there's nothing new about it.

My guess would be the bugged server browser. But that's just a guess

ofc they quit because of one little bug!
no its because wsw is free and ppl dont give a shit about a game they didnt paid anything
just watch COD n gta and that shit
its as buggy as wsw but ppl paid money for that and therefor they want to get entertainment back from that bugpile
what i try to say is in wsw no1 has to deal with it
It's terrible indeed to see how quickly the number of new players
dropped. Bug is a lil' annoying, but most of the feedback I've read
was about how strange it is to have so many servers available and
such a small number of players using them.
I agree to it :) tried pickup a couple of times, was funny, did like it. Only it's frustrating to launch the game and see there's noone to play with, when some are probably waiting for a pickup to start ! & I believe bomb appealed to many a newcomer (easy access with limited number of weapons, no item-pickup, cool rhythm &tc.).
EDIT. @ Vic : I'm not intending to offend in any way the work you and the dev team have done. I love the game and am just worried that its ecg seems to be turning so flat.

Well, Warsow is never going to be popular and we're just beating a
dead horse here

...and money + uber mega launch date in some New York building with lasers and a Lady Gaga concert ;P

I'll put a dress made of meat and sing if needed ^^
What an awful picture... the horse is not dead yet.
I don't think I could quit this game permanently. I'm a Sowian now even though I'm a bad one.

whilst i agree that hardcore dm gametypes generally are for the more obsessed, isnt it the job of the development team to make a game a little less generic and to add replayability? perhaps its generic only because you (as in wsw devs, past present and maybe future) choose it to be so?
Yeah, Warsow is a dm shooter, mainly targeted for 1v1, newsflash!
It has been that from the start and still is, and there's no way
that can be changed. Or will be.

glad to read that =)
didnt we in 0.6 have a bomb.pub irc chan and brought back public
bomb from the dead? this should be done again.
