My concerns with Warsow Competitive Play
It's obvious to me that the game was designed to be much like
Quake, which is fine. But if you're going to try and compete with a
game that already owns that domain, you need to step your game up a
bit more. I have a few concerns with the game which I believe is
hurting it overall for the e-sports aspect.
The gun physiques aren't exactly that great. I feel like every gun is delayed a little too much and not enough animation behind them to give you the visual appeal that you hit somebody or the area around them is being hit.
When I first loaded in to the game, I was absolutely impressed with the art style, until I heard the sound. Not only is the gun sound extremely mono and bad, but the overall sound of just trying to locate where a person is on the map is also bad. I believe this area needs much more development in order to succeed for greater game play.

Just as a note, you might try switching the sound module to openal
(you'll need to install openal first of course)
Still, I do understand what you mean. The problem is that we don't really have good examples of sounds that'd fit warsow well while being unique. I suppose Jihnsius could try messing with it a bit, but his specialty is music; he did the soundtrack. So only if he's interested.

warsow is in a niche, not trying to own anything, if you ask me.
it's not better than quake, its different.
cant say too much about delayed guns. i bet theres a load of people, who will argue that its a problem on your end. i for my part dont feel that guns would be delayed anymore, but i had that with insta back in 0.42.
cg_gun 0 (right?) to hide the weapon. if you have any ideas to improve visual appeal, bring em. i think other quakelikes dont have more than explosion sprites and a few particles, either.

I agree completely and I'm fairly sure myself and others have given
the same suggestions. The weapons just don't have a good feel to
them.
I don't think there is interest in fixing this, though...

I may get flamed for saying this, but why does it matter what the
weapons sound like. As long as they hit their target and I hear the
cowbell, it doesn't really matter. Or am I just being too
superficial?

You won't get flamed (but I might). Of course there are people who like the current sounds or don't care. Every time I get a friend to try Warsow, though, they say they don't like it either because the rockets are weird or they don't like the weapon sounds and/or models.
I know I've complained about this stuff in the past, so you're probably thinking I influenced them to think the same, but I didn't. I tell them Warsow is cool, just try it, etc., and that is what they always say.
There is the exception of a couple QL players that tried it when 1.0 was released. They didn't complain about anything, but they did quit days later because there just weren't enough players in North America.
Edit: BTW, stuff like this seems to be interpreted as hate on these forums. It's not hate, it's constructive criticism. Warsow is close to perfect, it just needs that little extra fun factor, and that mostly comes from the feel of the weapons.

Ok, the feel of weapons will be increased in the next version.
Gonna bump the "feel" weapdef numbers for 1.01
Stop spreading FUD please, constructive criticism is taken as such. Irc hate is another thing.
And ye, I'll pass on your thoughtful words to our army of sound sfx designers, who have been strangely slacking for the past several years, awaiting for the pointing community finger..

in warsow, being able to locate an enemy with sound is WAY easier than for instance in cpm. its really easy, one might even argue that it is too damn easy.
i am though using openAl and havent used qf since 0.5 so i have no idea how it is when using that
afaik there weren't noticeable updates for the sounds (exept for
the announcer and gb) since 0.3. Also, there is no new player model
since 0.5.
So, i guess our lovely dev team has lack of modelers and sound designers. Ppl, stop speaking known things! Start helping Wasow!

weapon sounds have alrdy been talked about, truely not a new
discussion. idk how this influences competitive playing though:p
As much as I hate to say it, I think your going to have to live
with it.

This is what I meant, I knew there would be a spiteful post from you here eventually. If Warsow makes you so unhappy, then forget what your dad says, quitting is an option.

your qutting would cost nothing to warsow, but Vic's one would be very painful. So, be careful with the words, my dear friend =)
