As a general rule, I'd say try to stay away from using curves where people are prone to jump\walljump in race maps. As it feels kinda random when you land on a 64x64 bevel which way you'll go. Not saying that this map suffers from this, but just an advice if you're gonna make more race maps.

Yeah making it less steep will probably fix the problem. I don't think I want to make the finish brush taller. The idea is that you're supposed to land on the platform to finish so making it taller would kind of defy that logic. smile

I'm aware of that. Experimented with making the tubes out of brushes for a while but it was just too much work to be worth the trouble, and so far the curves haven't been an issue. smile

Too long? yikes I was actually considering making it slightly longer for the last stretch just before the finish line. Guess I should reconsider. smile

I have released a new version. 0.3b \o/ I actually released it yesterday but I was pulled away before I had a chance to post about it here. I was very short on time this week so I didn't get much done. I tried to solve the ramp bug but at the angle it stopped acting up it looked completely out of place so I left it as it was. I did however make some significant changes to the first part again. I was aiming for a more fluid feel at high speed but I might have made it more difficult in the process, perhaps taking some of the fun out of it. Would love to hear some input. smile

great!

Few things:
- ramp is still bugged, did you decrease its angle slightly like I suggested?
- the start is much better
- why did you change the end bit? :< you've turned it into a series of small steps, it was better when they were bigger.

I did 31.6 secs on my 3rd try, I'll be aiming for 30 cos I got stuck on the end steps and lost a second.

<kckzi> 36, is that the length of ur dick... in MILLIMETERS?

didnt make it to the end yet and i possibly never will cuz i cant figure out how to do some trix in the vertical tube...
anyway i'd suggest to make it impossible to hide under the podest where one starts, just for common sense, and also that you die when you fall down like in usual racemaps, so one doesnt have to press kill again and again... lava for example would give a cool look to the map btw or better green acid slime like being in the sewers of warsow city - i still like that concept tongue.

- Yeah I did, and it didn't work. I had to decrease the angle significantly before it had any effect and by then it looked out of place and I didn't gain as much altitude when doing that trick.

- I wanted to do something more interesting for that section but I was running out of time so I left it like it was when I was right in the middle of working on that part. I'm going to start radiant right now and try to figure out what I want to do there. And take another look at that ramp. smile

The end steps in 0.2 were better than 0.3.

Also at the end instead of having to land on that central circle, you could make it like a pipe which you have to land inside, and the pipe could be like 128 units high. Then better players would be able to use the trick at the end (where you wj at the top of the last ramp) instead of over jumping the finish brush :<

Could you perhaps record and send a demo or give a more detailed description of what you can't figure out?
I'm trying to make it easy enough so that most people are at least able to finish it, while still allow more skilled racers to enjoy it. Input on things like that is crucial to make the map enjoyable for the less talented racers out there. smile

I'll think about adding some green acid. The reason I've avoided using it so far is to allow for some limited cheating in the horizontal part for players who aren't able to complete all the jumps perfectly. If you fall down you can just keep going but you'll lose your momentum. But having it has its advantages too. I'll probably add it to the next version or the version after that as a test at least and see if it works.

at first glance the jumppad isnt easy to recognice as such, could need a neater texture

36 will be glad to hear that I finally solved the ramp bug. Well at least I think I have. You probably need a higher initial speed when hitting it now because of the decreased angle, but I managed to pull it off a few times while testing so it should work.

I also did something completely different for the final part. It's a little longer now so don't be surprised if your times are increased. But I think it feels much smoother now and it's also slightly more noob friendly. smile

On the like thin walkway bit across the middle you've changed what was a ramp into a step which is annoying as I used to slide off the ramp. Other than that it seems great and yeh the ramp bug seems fixed wink

I'm experimenting with that section trying to make the transition a little smoother from the "thin walkway" to the first row of thin vertical pipes. I'll take that into consideration as I continue my experiments. smile

I do exaggerate tongue, its only 1 place where I overjump (cos of going to fast). Too compensate I just need to remember to slow down slightly/or take a slightly longer path. Its not a big problem.

Ah I see. I'm not 100% finished in that section of the horizontal pipe yet so that problem might go away in a release or two. Demos are so helpful. \o/ Neat little walljump at the beginning by the way. It's very interesting to see other people approach the map in different ways. big_smile

I redesigned the thin walkway and tried some crazy lighting. It got slightly darker in some areas so I'll have to look into that for v0.6. But my new lights look awesome. \ó/

v0.7 released! \o/

There is now instant-death green acid on the floor in the first part. I'd like some input on this, but I think I like it myself so it will probably stay. It also looks awesome. big_smile
I also removed the grating on the floor in the vertical tube. Falling down there also results in death so don't fall down there. wink

Some good news for the noobs out there is that I added some extra platforms to jump on in the first part. They should make it slightly easier for those of you not able to gain the speed required to pull off some of the jumps. These new platforms shouldn't change the way more experienced racers do their runs, they are mainly there to help the less skilled guys actually get to the finish line.

The pipes in the vertical tube also got some tweaking. I pulled them out from the wall a bit, rotated them to match up with the curved wall and for realism I added a mechanism for holding the pipes in place. Jumping on these pipes should be slightly easier now.
The main reason people fall down between these pipes however is when they move too fast. So if you find yourself frustrated by these things just calm down and do them one at a time. smile

i dont think that those extra platforms are a benefitial idea cuz u shouldnt orientate race maps for nubs imo, cuz then they dont need to train to see the end and wont get better, on the other hand they wont see the end when they dont get better after all. im not a hardcore racer though. anyway i like to see the slime but i think it could use some more texture on it like e.g. lava does have to supprt cartoon, knoimean?

Personally I find race maps that are close to impossible to be rather frustrating. I prefer when it's fairly easy to complete a run but hard to get a really good time. There is certainly an audience for both types but I prefer the latter. smile

Don't worry, the slime texture was just a quick mockup in Photoshop to find the right color so I'll be looking into improving it along with everything else gfx related for the final release. smile
