Topic: Data License?
Seems like engine and gamecode are GPL, but what license has the data (models, textures, sounds and maps)?

Data is copyrighted. At least by now.
Did that change lately?
On qexpo I recall to have read that Warsow is a game under the GPL now (also on Happypenguin).
And it's featured in the "Open Games List" on quakesrc forums (in the open section, not in the proprietary).
Nope. It didn't change. GPL only applies to the code.
GPL does not mean that you don't have a copyright on your works. It only describes the restrictions you impose on others when modifying your works.See http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html

This statement in the "concept" section of the Warsow website is very confusing:
* Standalone game for Windows and Linux under GPL ;
When only the engine is GPL, it is not advisable to advertise the game as "being under GPL". People might mistake this as if both engine and data are GPL and start "borrowing" the data for their own GPL projects. But since the data is not licensed GPL, this of course leads to trouble.
It would be better to refer only to the engine as being GPL, not the entire game.
Like changing the description from
Warsow is a standalone first person shooter for Windows and Linux. It is under the GPL and based on the 3D Engine Qfusion (a modification of Quake 2's engine).
to

Of course everybody would be happy if the data would just be licensed GPL, too ;-)
Yep, you're right. I'm asking Solomonk to change the description.
The data won't be GPL until the final version is released. We're still creating it, and we'd like at least to be the first ones in release our game, y'know. After that point, it will depend on what each artist decides to do with his own property.

That's a good point. I'm happy to see another game that's going to be free(-as-speech?) :-)
An agreement with every artist that his data will be GPL in the final release could be a good idea, this way there wouldn't be such a licensing chaos as currently is in Cube.
